Individual & Family Health Coverage in Texas
Compare household coverage around how each person actually uses care. The lowest premium is not always the lowest total cost, and one family member’s doctors, prescriptions, or timing can make a different plan more practical for the household.
Build the comparison around your household
Start with a simple inventory for each person who needs coverage: doctors, specialists, prescriptions, expected care, preferred facilities, and any timing issue such as a job-based plan ending.
Compare more than the monthly premium
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the premium? | It is the recurring cost to keep coverage active, but it is only one part of annual cost. |
| What is the deductible? | It can affect how much you pay before certain covered benefits begin paying. |
| What are the copays and coinsurance? | These affect the cost of office visits, prescriptions, procedures, and other care. |
| What is the maximum out-of-pocket? | It helps define the household’s potential exposure for covered in-network care that counts toward the limit. |
| Who is in network? | The exact doctors, hospitals, urgent care centers, specialists, and facilities can affect both access and cost. |
Household members may need different things
One person may care most about a specialist or prescription while another mainly needs predictable primary-care access. Compare each person’s use instead of assuming one headline feature tells you whether the plan works for the whole family.

If employer coverage is ending
Losing job-based coverage can create several decisions at once: Marketplace Special Enrollment, COBRA when applicable, another employer plan, or Medicaid/CHIP eligibility. The dates matter.

Questions to verify before choosing
- Are the family’s important doctors and facilities in the exact plan network?
- Are prescriptions on the current formulary and what tier applies?
- Does the plan require referrals for specialist care?
- What care is covered before the deductible?
- How do individual and family deductibles or out-of-pocket limits interact?
- What happens for urgent or emergency care away from home?
- What is the effective date and what must happen before coverage becomes active?
