Dental and Vision Coverage in Texas: What to Compare

Dental and vision coverage should be compared separately from major medical health insurance. Waiting periods, provider networks, annual maximums, deductibles, covered services, and benefit limits can materially change the value of a plan.

Dental coverage through the Marketplace

HealthCare.gov says Marketplace dental coverage may appear inside some health plans or as a separate dental plan. You cannot buy a Marketplace stand-alone dental plan unless you are also buying a Marketplace health plan at the same time.

Separate adult dental plans can have waiting periods, so review when coverage actually begins for different services.

Dental questions to verify

  • Is preventive care covered immediately?
  • Are there waiting periods for basic or major services?
  • What is the annual maximum benefit?
  • What deductible applies?
  • Which dentists and specialists are in network?
  • How are fillings, crowns, root canals, oral surgery, and orthodontia treated?
  • Are there frequency limits on cleanings, X-rays, or other services?

Vision questions to verify

  • Does the plan cover routine eye exams?
  • Is there an allowance or schedule for frames, lenses, or contact lenses?
  • Which optometrists, ophthalmologists, and optical retailers are in network?
  • How often can you use exam or eyewear benefits?
  • Are medically necessary eye services handled under the health plan rather than the routine vision benefit?

Do not compare only the premium

A low monthly premium can still produce poor value if the plan has a long waiting period, limited network, low annual maximum, or weak coverage for the services you expect to use.
