Health Insurance for Self-Employed and 1099 Workers in Texas

If you are a freelancer, consultant, independent contractor, or solo business owner with no employees, HealthCare.gov says you can use the individual Marketplace. For self-employed households, income estimates, timing, doctors, prescriptions, and cash-flow tolerance can make the comparison more complicated than simply choosing the lowest premium.

Why self-employed coverage decisions are different

When there is no employer benefits department making the first set of choices for you, you have to organize the comparison yourself. That can be an advantage, but it also means keeping income estimates and enrollment timing current.

Marketplace income is based on your expected year

HealthCare.gov says Marketplace savings for self-employed applicants are based on estimated net self-employment income for the year you are getting coverage, not simply last year’s income. If your business income changes materially during the year, update the Marketplace application.

A practical self-employed checklist

  • Estimate realistic annual net self-employment income.
  • List household members who need coverage.
  • Identify doctors, specialists, hospitals, and prescriptions that matter.
  • Compare premium with deductible and out-of-pocket exposure.
  • Think about cash-flow volatility: can the household absorb a higher deductible during a slow business month?
  • Verify the exact coverage type if reviewing anything outside the Marketplace.
  • Track enrollment deadlines and changes in existing coverage.

If you recently left a job

If you became self-employed after losing job-based coverage, the loss of that coverage can create a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. HealthCare.gov says losing job-based coverage generally gives you a limited enrollment window, so do not wait until your new business is fully settled before checking the date.

2027 Marketplace timing

Open Enrollment starts November 1, 2026. December 15 is the deadline for coverage that can start January 1, and January 15 is the final annual Open Enrollment deadline.

Do not assume every “private” option is equivalent

Coverage outside the Marketplace can differ in benefits, exclusions, pre-existing-condition rules, network structure, renewability, and other protections. Verify the actual policy type before comparing it with ACA major medical coverage.
